Photoblog: #Transitvote in SC1

It is election day in South Carolina today. Former Governor Mark Sanford is running against businesswoman Elizabeth Colbert Busch. In what is sure to be a close election, it has been a great ride working with our local partners, the Hungryneck Straphangers, and the ATU in a successful effort to elevate transit as an electoral issue. We have educated and engaged thousands transit riders in a bus focused get out the vote campaign. In case you missed it, here is the streetsblog article on the work. We have handed out nearly 30,000 pieces of educational literature as we encourage people to #votetransit.

The goals of the campaign were:

  • Give candidates a chance to meet bus riders, tour the system, and learn about transit issues and challenges in their district
  • Educate voters and riders on the candidates’ position on public transit.
  • Encourage transit riders to vote

Below are a few photos of the past weeks in Charleston and the surrounding area. Thank you to CARTA, the agency for providing this service, and the local ATU members who carry thousands to work, school, and appointments every day across the region. Also huge thanks to all of the local advocates, especially the tireless work of Straphangers leader William Hamilton, in making this all happen and working for a better future for public transit and its riders across South Carolina and the country.
